Phalarope, the former Austin, a yacht built in 1881 at East Boston, Mass., was purchased by the Bureau of Fisheries in 1899; taken over by the Navy 19 May 1917; and commissioned 6 December 1917, Boatswain T. Leander in command
P)ullarope was being used by the Bureau of Fisheries at Wood's Hole, Mass., at the time the United States entered World War I. Throughout the war she operated as a patrol craft for the Navy at Wood's Hole. She decommissioned shortly after the war's end, and was returned to the Bureau of Fisheries 2 August 1919.
