Sir John Kempthorne (1620-79), a captain in the British Navy, commanded Mary Rose during her historic fight with seven Algerines in 1669.

Trumpeter (DE-279) (q.v.) was renamed HMS Kempthorne upon transfer to the United Kingdom undeer lend-lease 23 October 1943.
