ST. VINCENT & GRENADINES

St. Vincent was given to the British in 1763 but its indigenous Indian population, the Caribs, did not concede until they had all been either killed or ousted from the island in 1796. Independence was a long time coming (1979) and the country has been slow to develop economically, remaining one of the poorest in the West Indies. Natural disasters (volcano, hurricanes) have also hurt the country's economic growth.
