he Sumerian civilization developed along the Tigres and Euphrates River. Agriculture in the area could only be sustained using an extensive system of irrigation, and thus it could only develop along the river. The rivers suppplied sustanance in the form of fish as well as reeds and clay for building materials. While the rivers provide for life they also caused devestation when they frequently flooded.
