Israelite Women

Women in Israel had limited rights. Only men could intiate divorce proceedings. Women role in religious ceremonies was limited. The responsibility to teach ones' children "torah" was limited to sons and not to daughters. Women could not be witness's in most legal proceedings. As was the case in many other societies of the time, women could only own property if they were widowed, or unmarried without brothers or a father.
