Sculpture in the Byzantine Empire

Sculpture was initially an extension of Roman sculpture.  Early sculptures were primarily great marble heads.  Roman realism was then replaced by more impressionistic sculptures.  Ivory icons have been preserved from this period and remain one of the Empire's enduring legacies.
