Located near Dallas, Texas, the early years of Lewisville are reminiscent of the wild, wild west. With a desire for a better life, people moved west looking for land and a place to settle and call home. The initial land charter for Lewisville was given to The Peters Colony Land Grant Company in 1841. The Republic of Texas wanted them to start settling the northern region of the state. They offered 600 families 640 acres each, and if a bachelor came, he would receive 320 acres instead. In 1844 the King family, John and Augustus found their way to the prairie on the eastern side. More settlers came in 1845, including the Fox family who brought slaves with them as well.
It wasn’t until 1881 that the town really started to thrive. This is when the railroad came through which marked a big transition in the city’s history. The railroad landed just south of the city, and this opened up opportunities for commerce, travel, and visitors to come in from all over the country. While the town had been known for having a robust cotton gin since 1867, it wasn’t until the railroad came through that businesses like these could truly thrive.
Thankfully, Lewisville worked hard to attract a variety of people which helped to diversify its businesses. So much so, that the people in the area didn’t experience too much hardship as a result of the Great Depression. Their businesses still operated and thrived. Things like saloons, markets, cotton, and other businesses were very popular in that time period.
By the 1950’s, Lewisville, Texas experienced a season of rapid growth. This coincided with the building of the Garza-Little Elm Dam. The building of the dam helped to establish a lake in Lewisville, and then in the years to follow, more development nearby led to continued suburban growth. The population went from less than 5,000 people in the 1950s to almost 100,000 by the 2010 census. This growth was propelled by the development of the Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport in the 1970s and the Vista Ridge Mall in the late 1980s.
As more people moved to Lewisville over the years, the need for more businesses, better roads, and schools became clear. While the first school was established by the Masons in 1857, the official school district wasn’t established in Lewisville until 1902. Education has always been a priority for the people of Lewisville.
