Vedette—a wooden-hulled, launch-type motor boat built in 1914 at Bayonne, N.J. by the Elco Co.—was acquired by the Navy during World War I from the Panama Canal Co. for use as a section patrol boat. The vessel served in the Canal Zone for the duration of hostilities and was returned to her owner on 31 December 1918.
