Operation Enduring Freedom Launched
On October 7th 2001 the United States and Great Britain launched Operation Enduring Freedom with air raids on Taliban and Al Qaeda positions. Thanks to the massive American air support the Northern Alliance began to make rapid progress and they captured Mazar-i-Sharif on November 9th. By November 13th the Taliban surprisingly left Kabul and the Northern Alliance occupied the city. The Taliban withdrew to Kandahar, which fell to allied forces on November 26th. The forces established their first permanent base outside Kandahar called FOB Rhino.
