slavery in the Roman Empire

 

While slavery was widespread throughout the ancient world, no people had more slaves then the Romans. Roman wars were the chief source of Romes slaves. With every victory more and more slaves were brought back to Rome. Slaves were used both as domestic workers and as member of large gangs that worked farms.
There were a number of large scale slave revolts. The most famous led by Spartacus in 73 BC . He had a following of 70,000 slaves who defeated several large Roman armies. Finally in 71 BC he was trapped and killed in Southern Italy.
