History of Austin

In 1830 the first permanent anglo settlement of Texas was begun when the village of Waterloo was established. In 1839 that village was selected to be the capital of the new republic of Texas. It was named after Stephen Austin, considered the father of Texas. The first mayor, judge Edwin Waller laid out a street plan for the city, and that plan has survived to this day. After Texas became a State, it was decided that Austin should remain the capital. In the 1880s, the population had grown to the point where the town of Boston became a city. In 1888 the state capital of Texas was completed. At the time, it was advertised as the seventh-largest building in the world. In 1893 the great Granite dam was created. It controlled the flooding of the Colorado River and provided the town with electricity. In the postwar period, Austin developed a significant technology sector that has served well. In recent years many high-tech companies have established campuses in the city of Austin.
