Stevens, John

Stevenson, Andrew

Speaker of the House

(1784-1857)

Born in Culpeper Co., Va. in 1784, Stevenson served as a Democratic member in the House of Representatives (1821-34).  From 1827 to 1834 he was speaker of the House.

A staunch supporter of Andrew Jackson, Stevenson served as U.S. minister to Great Britain from 1836-41.  He died in 1857.
