April

April 5th 1776- An American fleet under the command of Esek Hopkins intercepts a small fleet of British ships. The Americans capture the British schooner HMS Hawk and the Bomb Brigane Bolton



April 24th 1778- John Paul Jones captures the British vessel Drake off the coast of Northern Ireland. The British Captain George Burdon was killed in the engagement. The Drake is the first major warship of that the Americans captured in the war.

April 2nd 1781- The USS Alliance under the command of John Barry was attacked by British privateers. The Alliance captures the British ship the Mars

April 29th 1812- The USS Essex commanded by Captain Porter seized two English vessels in the Indian Ocean.

April 29th 1814- The USS Peacock captures the British ship Epervier.

April 4th 1942- The HMS Dorestshire and the HMS Cornwall two British cruisers are sunk by Japanese planes near Columo, Ceylon.

April 10th 1942- The USS Finch AM-9 is sunk by Japanese planes off the Philippines.
The USS Thresher sank the Sado the a British submarine

April 13th 1942- The USS Grayling sink the Ryujin Maru off the coast of Kyushu

April 18th- Colonel Doolittle fly B-25s off the USS Hornet and they successfully bomb Japan. The raid was deemed a great psychological success.

April 3rd 1943- The USS Pickerel S-117 sinks the Sub Chaser No 13 near New Guinea.

April 5th 1943- The USS O'Bannon DD-430 sinks the Japanese Submarine RO-34 in the Solomon Islands


April 7th 1943 Japanese planes sink The USS Aaron War DD-483 and the Oiler KANAWAH AO-1, and the Cargo Ship ADHARA AK-71 off Guadacanal.

April 9th 1943 The USS Tautog SS-199 sinks the Japanese destroyer Isonmi

April 28th - The USS Gudgeon sinks the Japanese ship the Kamakura Maru.


April 7th 1944- The USS Champlin DD-601 sinks the German submarine U-856 in the North Atlantic. The USS Saufley DD-465 sinks the Japanese destroyer I-2 north of New Ireland.

April 13th 1944- The USS Harder SS-257 sunk the Japanese Destroyer Ikazuchi in the Central Pacific.

April 16th 1944 The submarine U-550 is sunk by American destroyer escorts.

April 20th 1944 The USS Seahorse SS-304 sinks the Japanese Submarine RO-45.

April 26th 1944- The USS Gilmore DE-18 sank the Japanese Submarine I-180 in the North Pacific

April 27th 1944- The USS Bluegill SS-242 sank the Japanese light cruiser Yabari near the Palau islands
The USS Halibat SS-232 sinks the Japanese minelayer Kamone near New Guinea.

April 28th The USS Pogy SS-266 sinks the Japanese submarine I-183 .


April 7th 1945- The USS Gustafson DE-182 sinks the German U- Boat U-857 off New England
The Submarine Gabilian SS-252 and the Charr (SS-328) sink the Japanese cruiser Isuzi off the Celebes.
