September 6th 1776- John Paul Jones Providence defeats the HMS Favorite.
September 1777- USS Raleigh and Alfred engage a British convoy in the West Indies. The Americans pull back and battle is indecisive.
September 7th, 1777 The USS Delaware is captured after running aground near Philadelphia
September 22nd 1777 The USS Lexington is captured by the HMS Alert
September 25th 1778- The USS Raleigh engages the HMS Experiment and HMS Unicorn off the coast of Maine. Although outgunned they fight on until the Raliegh is forced to ground itself so its crew escapes.
September 23, 1779. The most remarkable single ship duel of the American Revolutionary War was between the American Bon Homme Richard commanded by John Paul Jones, and the HMS Serapis on September 23, 1779. The Serapis was a 50 gun ship that outgunned the Bonne Homme Richard which was barely sea worthy. When the captain of the Serapis hailed the Bonne Homme Richard and demanded surrender, John Paul Jones answered" Surrender be damned, I have not begun to fight". The Bon Homme Richard went on to vanquish the Serapis.
September 5th 1813- The HMS Boxer is vanquished by the USS Enterprise off the coast of Maine.
On September 10, 1813, Commodore Perry defeats the British fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie. The Battle, which is hard fought by both sides, ends up with a total defeat for the British. Perry sends his famous message to his commander: "WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE OURS. Lake Erie becomes an American lake.
September 12th-26th 1813- The USS Wasp captures the British Brigantine Three Brothers, HMS Bacchus and the Brigantine Atlanta.
September 4, 1942-The USS Little (APD-3) and Greogory (APD-4) are sunk in the Sealark Channel off Guadacanal.
September 3- 1943- The Ellet DD-398 sinks the Japanese submarine I-168
September 9th 1943- The USS Trout SS-202) sinks the Japanese Submarine I-182 off the Philippine.
September 1, 1943- The Destroyer Rown DD-405 is sunk off the coast of Italy.
September 7th 1944- The USS Paddle SS-263-) sink the Shinya Maru off Mindanao
September 19th 1944- The USS Shad (SS-235) sank the Japanese Frigate Ioshima of the coast of Honshu
September 26th 1944- The USS McCoy reynolds (DE-440) sinks the Japnese Submarine I-175 off the coast of the Palau islands. The Pargo (SS-264) sinks the Japanese Submarine Aotaka off Bornea.
